Here are five tips to keep in mind as you work toward that goal.

Exercise
Although exercising boosts your metabolism, it’s not easy—especially if you’re a teenager. Try working out in small doses throughout your day—do jumping jacks while brushing your teeth or walking at lunch instead of going out with friends. Set aside time on weekends for long walks or bike rides. Remember, consistency is key; aim for 10 minutes of physical activity every day, even if it feels like nothing at first. And don’t forget that what you eat matters too: Loading up on fruits and veggies will help boost your metabolism naturally. (Just keep an eye on portions—fruit juice doesn’t count!) Those few extra hours can really make a difference. And if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, talk with your doctor about safe options that won’t put stress on your growing body. #2 Exercise Regularly: Make exercise one of your habits. Whether it’s working out for two weeks straight or only breaking a sweat once a week, make sure you maintain your active lifestyle so you can stay leaner and stronger over time. Also remember that activity is anything that gets your heart rate moving; whether it’s going for a walk around town or dancing around with friends, it all counts!
Cut Sugar
Sugar slows down your metabolism and is linked to obesity. If you’re trying to lose weight, limiting sugar intake is a great way to kick-start your metabolism. In addition, high sugar diets can lead to type 2 diabetes, which has been proven as one of the leading causes of obesity among teenagers. Replace sugary snacks with fresh fruit or veggies instead. You’ll be more satisfied (read: less likely to reach for that bag of chips) and reap major health benefits! See what kind of difference it makes by switching from soda to seltzer water; you’ll curb hunger pangs better than a glass of juice would and benefit from fewer calories. By trimming calories in simple ways like these, you can boost your metabolism naturally—without any added exercise or special plans. Cut Down on Carbs
Eating too many refined carbs—like those found in pastries, chips, and white bread—can slow your metabolism by making your body burn calories less efficiently. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is a great way to keep your metabolism running strong. If you’re cutting down on carbs or just watching your weight, you should also consider eliminating soda from your diet completely. Researchers at Purdue University found that rats who consumed high fructose corn syrup as part of their diets became overweight and obese. While we can’t say eating one soda will have quite the same effect on us humans, it is something to think about. Finally, if you snack throughout the day between meals, try substituting healthy snacks like almonds for old-fashioned potato chips. Walnuts are another good choice here: they have more total fat than most other nuts (good fats!) but aren’t as calorie dense—and studies show an increased consumption of nuts leads to decreased levels of belly fat over time! All in all, snacking really isn’t so bad when you choose wisely. You should always be careful not to eat too much junk food during these times, though—if you find yourself getting overly hungry before dinner (or not being able to fall asleep because your stomach is growling), go ahead and treat yourself with a well-deserved meal replacement bar or shake instead.
Change your Diet
In order to boost your metabolism, you’ll want to eat small meals often, increasing how many calories your body is taking in at any given time. You should also watch your sugar intake and make sure that most of your calories come from lean proteins, vegetables and whole grains. It’s also important not to fall into any restrictive diet traps—eating too few calories or avoiding certain foods for an extended period of time can slow down your metabolism and actually put it into starvation mode. This will cause you to lose muscle mass instead of fat mass. You should always consume around 1,400 calories per day, no matter what! Finally, exercise regularly! We know—no one wants to exercise when they’re hungover or just trying to relax after work. But exercise gives your body much-needed energy (that includes emotional energy). And when you run on high-octane fuel like physical activity and good food, your body doesn’t have room left over for excess fat. Besides, there are tons of other benefits to working out: daily exercise helps stave off depression and anxiety; studies show regular workouts lower your risk for heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer; workouts also help improve overall mood by releasing endorphins. It might be hard getting started but once you’ve made healthy habits like exercising more than part of your routine, getting up early every morning to fit in a workout will start to feel natural.
